This past week I was leading worship for a kids overnight camp and every year the camp has a theme verse for the week that they put to music and teach the kids.
This year the verse was Galations 5:22-25. I got to put it to music and make up some fun melodies and of course added a rap part (like all the other pop songs these days)
I like the way the Living Translation puts it:
"But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; and here there is no conflict with Jewish laws. Those who belong to Christ have nailed their natural evil desires to his cross and crucified them there. If we are living now by the Holy Spirit’s power, let us follow the Holy Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives."
I was thinking about how some people judge spirituality. Some judge it on what people abstain from doing, some on certain types of beleifs. But I love what this verse says; that if we know God and the Holy Spirit is influencing our lives we will become more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self controlled.
A good spiritual checkup to ask ourselves every once in a while is:
Are we becoming more loving or less loving?
Are we experiencing more joy or less joy?
Are we growing in patience or getting easily annoyed?
Are we treating people with kindness or being mean?
Are we making better decisions or worse decisions?
Are we growing in faithfulness to God and others?
Are we showing more gentleness or treating people harshly?
Do we have more self control than we did a year ago or are we gradually veering out of control?
You can tell a tree by it's fruit. So if you want to get some insight into what's in someone's heart, look at the fruit their life is bearing.
So today do a little fruit checkup, and ask God to help you grow the good kind!
